- The new record features rare cuts and 12 previously unreleased tracks, plus music videos and more than 2,000 individual Oval sounds.
Oval will release a multimedia album next month on Shitkatapult called OvalDNA.
After a nine-year break, Markus Popp returned as Oval last summer with O, an album that signaled a new direction for the German avant-garde producer: instead of the glitchy electronic sounds that were once Oval's trademark, the records used organic sounds and acoustic instruments as source material. "After years of dissection and denial, I wanted to try making 'real' music for a change," Popp said at the time.
According to a press release, OvalDNA was meant to come before O, thereby capping off the earlier era of Oval's career. The release consists of two parts. The first is a collection of past Oval productions, plus 12 previously unreleased tracks. The second is a DVD packed with all sorts of content, including two videos—a documentary by PlaygroundTV and the music video for "Glass UFO"—ten bonus tracks, something called "OvalDNA SoundBrowser/Sequenzer software" and .AIFF files of more than 2,000 individual sounds from past Oval productions. The package also includes a 20-page booklet with text by Popp and the artist David Toop.
