Julio Bashmore - Husk

  • After its stratospheric rise last year, the stock of Julio Bashmore Inc has proved a robust investment in 2012. So far it's consisted of one ubiquitous single in the shape of "Au Seve," a bank of remixes and a major production role in one of the albums of the year, Jessie Ware's Mercury-nominated Devotion. Perhaps all this excitement explains why "Husk" is one of Matt Walker's most restrained offerings yet. Built around a single-note flute blast, Bashmore himself is quoted as saying that the track is "polished with the fine gloss of New Beat." That may be overplaying it, but the tempo is certainly pitched down in comparison to much of the JB oeuvre. There are familiar Bashmore tropes on show too, not least that frantic military snare roll that rises from the ether. The flip, "Pelican," is a different matter. A meeting of deep and crispy synths in an early '90s UK house style, ghostly electro pan-pipes and crashy, jacking claps, its winning element, however, is the juddering bassline. We'll put money on it being the one with most legs.
