Waifs & Strays - I Saw Yo Girl

  • Having released the Love on Another EP through Leftroom last year, Bristol's Amos Nelson and Richard Beanland mark the end of their European tour by returning to local house institution Futureboogie. Following on from the Be Patient 12-inch in autumn 2011, the duo's second release for the West Country label comprises two versions of the title track and the B-side, "Remedy." Sub-heavy and loaded with visceral swagger, the "Full Acid Vox Edit" constitutes seven minutes of stomping ghetto house, laced with filthy acid lines and a backdrop of self-aggrandising rap. Stripped of the vocals, the "Dub Edit" offers a more understated alternative, but the omission arguably mugs the track of its garish infection. Over on the flipside, "Remedy" is instrumentally cut from a similar cloth, but an overlay of hollow vocals aligns it more with the bittersweet sound of Art Department. A full remix of the title track would have been nice, but all in all, there's enough party ammunition here to ignite any dance floor worth playing for.
