Jaw Jam - The Truth

  • Ever since Mount Kimbie and James Blake burst onto the scene, with their delicate yet powerful bass music, countless artists have scrambled to adapt these artists' distinct palette into dance floor miniatures. In 2013, the sound is getting tired—Kimbie and Blake have certainly moved on. Will DiMaggio's Jaw Jam project seems to be stuck in that era, at least judging from his second EP, The Truth. The title track isn't an exact rip-off, but it's hard not to hear echoes of the aforementioned in the tune's tapping percussion and dulcet squiggles of melody. A chopped-up Brandy sample only contributes to the nagging feeling that we've been here before. "The End (Music Is The Answer)" exacerbates the problem: its compressed rushes of warm static and oppressively filtered vocals are a dead ringer for any number of moments on Crooks & Lovers. "Late Nite" is more interesting, fastening the same elements to a twitchy, Baltimore-esque shudder replete with reinforced low-end. Lockah's remix of "The Truth" fares better, setting the track aglow with his signature cheery overtures, while ¥oin doesn't add much on his version, re-jigging it into a rough-and-tumble house jam.
