Osborne - Hold Up feat Joe Goddard

  • This meeting of Detroit acid veteran Todd Osborn and Hot Chip's Joe Goddard may seem like a curveball, but on the former's first output as Osborne since 2009's Hovercrafting, they make for an intuitive and natural pairing. "Hold Up" is a simple yet charming concoction. A foundation of warm, unhurried bass complements a lilting, high-pitched acid line that duets with Goddard's soulful vocal. Goddard's "Joe's Dub" rework of "Hold Up" doesn't fall far from the tree, with some additional bass layers and Osborn's acid line replaced with chiming synth work not unlike that on "Bassline '12" from Goddard's recent Taking Over EP. Osborn's solo outing "All Night" is aimed far more directly at the dance floor. An unbroken 4/4 kick and insistent "all night" vocal sample eventually open out with playful keys, calling to mind long, sweaty nights in warehouses. Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer's remix as Tuff City Kids anchors that vocal sample to a classic acid riff, with stripped-back, faintly cosmic results.
