Name One & Maxxi Soundsystem - One In Three

  • Just over a year on from their house juggernaut for Hypercolour "Regrets We Have No Use For," Maxxi Soundsystem and Name One attempt to pull off the same trick for Defected. Name One is no longer the junior party now, it seems, as he shares the bill on "One In Three." He revives the lazy, detached delivery of "Regrets," though here he sounds even more like he's reading out a shopping list. That feeling of ennui is reflected by the backing track, which never quite fires like its more fêted predecessor. For its first two-thirds it bumps along to a waft of melancholic pads and wandering bass synths that finally burst into bloom when it's almost too late. Being Defected, a remix package will surely follow, but the only alternative to the original for now is the dub. It doesn't entirely drop the vocal, leaving a minuscule, repetitive morsel of it in place. Once again, there's no doubting the might of Maxxi's basslines, but the track doesn't quite capture the imagination as it might have done.
