Galcher Lustwerk - Nu Day EP

  • To say Galcher Lustwerk burst onto the scene in 2013 doesn't quite do the man justice. In a little over six months, the New York-based producer put out one of the year's best EPs and claimed the top spot on our year-end mixes poll for his hypnotic "100% Galcher" mix. As a result, his next EP, an outing on Tsuba's vinyl-only Tsuba Limited offshoot, is one of 2014's most anticipated releases so far. The secret behind Lustwerk's success is his signature sound, a fusion of balmy deep house and his own socially conscious lyrics. The Nu Day EP leaves the vocals for the B-side, although both A-side cuts, "Nu Day 1" and "2," do enough to draw the listener in. The former has warm, messy pads and a wonderfully stringy bassline, while the latter features tender chords and glitchy melodies. "216" is a more stripped-back affair. Lustwerk's super-smooth rhymes work well over the leisurely groove, though when the vocals drop off midway through, the track could use an extra element or two to keep things interesting. Leaving the best till last, "Chillin In The Booth" is Lustwerk at his most deadly, combining raspy whispers with taut synths and a driving bassline. This release might not reach the dizzying heights of Tape 22, but it's confirmation that Lustwerk is anything but a flash in the pan.
