Bob Moses - First To Cry

  • Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance's Bob Moses project rocking up on Domino makes a lot of sense, given the British indie label's tendency to pepper its roster with electronic acts—Jon Hopkins, Four Tet, Junior Boys and so on. "I Ain't Going To Be The First To Cry" is a reworking of a 1974 Bobby Bland song that the New York-based Canadians take in a more maudlin direction. Bland was one of the great blues singers, and that vibe still infects Bob Moses's version, but they wrap it in muddy guitar licks and woozy beats. It's pleasant enough, yet you're left with the feeling that it lacks some of the gentle house flavor that made their last EP on Scissors & Thread so special. That's redressed somewhat by "Grace," where Howie and Vallance lay down a deep, early-hours groove seasoned with rat-a-tat snares and, as with the A-side, Tom Howie's soft, ennui-laden vocals. These sound like two good album tracks—which is surely is surely the format Bob Moses are heading towards.
