- Stylistically speaking, Rob Glassett's second EP as Fold for ManMakeMusic, Mr W00D, is a bit all over the place. There's the title track's garage-slanted house, a dubby techno roller called "Keif Chugwin," and "No Foolin,'" over eight minutes of filtered tech house. For all the different avenues Glassett takes the EP down, though, there's a consistency to Mr W00D. The chunky drums, well-utilized samples, subtle basslines and sparse melodies suggest a confident, versatile artist.
"Mr W00D" is the standout track, and has been rinsed in mixes by the likes of The Black Dog, xxxy and, of course, ManMakeMusic boss George FitzGerald. It's an exuberant bit of dance music built around a filtered disco sample, which Glassett rides for the first half before flipping it for a hands-in-the-air payoff in the second half. This simple trick gives the song an edge over the other two cuts, but it doesn't necessarily overshadow them. Straightforward as they are, "Keif Chugwin" and "No Foolin'" don't vie for the A-side, instead standing strong as no-frills productions meant to complement the lead track. But in the hands of Glassett, even these understated B-sides make for formidable tracks.
