- New York producer Gunnar Haslam's slew of 2014 releases for the likes of L.I.E.S. and Delsin were largely dark affairs. His debut for Mister Saturday Night, Let A Thousand Flowers Bloom, was possibly the most dissonant and chilly of the lot, but Margareten, his first release of 2015, has a levity that sets it apart from its predecessor.
It opens with "Poshlost," an earthy, welcoming piece of techno that achieves its sparked-up feel through bongos and a lovely Burger/Ink-like synth line. It's only a tentative move towards the dance floor, whereas the title track is a full-blooded one. Dominated by a muscular acid line that weaves its way around a hurried percussive spine, its Legowelt-ish effect is achieved with minimum fuss and maximum effectiveness. Only closer "Replacement" is at all bleak, though even its slow pattern of piano keys has a warmth that overcomes the brittle winds that hiss in the track's background.
