Red Axes - Sun My Sweet Sun

  • Red Axes's music straddles two worlds. Their groovy basslines appeal to deep house crews like Crosstown Rebels and Innervisions, while the stuff going on above—the weird melodies of bells, chimes and steel drums—tickles leftfield DJs like Lena Willikens and Young Marco. This is likely an oversimplification, but there's a reason the Tel Aviv duo has released music on labels as divergent as Crosstown Rebels, ESP Institute, Turbo and Dark Entries in the past couple of years. The title track from their latest EP, Sun My Sweet Sun, is likely to have a similarly broad appeal. It makes sense on Permanent Vacation, a label that's had success with crossover tunes in the past. (Both Tensnake's "Coma Cat" and Azari & III's "Reckless With Your Love" came out on the Munich label.) Red Axes exist in the same sphere as DJ Koze—oddball deep house, basically—and the sense of hanging intensity in "Sun My Sweet Sun" echoes Koze's "Mrs Bojangles" as cowbells rain down on the frantic bells, whistling synth melody and chunky bassline. The EP's other tracks tap into different sides of the Red Axes sound. "Cockroach" is languid and dubby, with steel drums and hazy, effect-laden strokes of guitar. "Neptune"'s slow build and swirling, psychedelic synths are suited to long blends for anyone wanting to inject some grandiosity into their sets.
