Obalski - Wind-s

  • Obalski is a Munich-based producer with close ties to the Public Possession crew. (He's a "long term shareholder," in their words.) On top of the three EPs he's released with the label, including Wind-s, he's made music for local theatre productions and art galleries. As you might expect from someone composing for such spaces, Obalski's music has an improvised feel. A wistful, kosmische-inspired track, "Wind-s" has ambling chord progressions and synth gusts that unwind gently. Gleaming melodies were stitched to eccentric house beats on Obalski's previous EPs, Introducing Obalski and According To Obalski, but the producer is equally engaging with the drumless, free-spirited drift of "Wind-s." Sharing the A-side is Mascaras's "Gentle Breeze Dub" of "Wind-s," which is more of a march down the street than a slow stroll. Stereo-panned drum rolls and cymbal crashes give the track some oomph, but its real power rests in the way Mascaras captures the playful essence of Obalski's original. Nick Höppner's remix is a more familiar DJ tool. He introduces a much warmer low-end, massaging the groove until it's completely free of the original knots and sharp angles. It's elegant and understated fare, but next to the other two tracks it sounds a little run of the mill.
