Jayda G & Laylay - Monroe Bumpa

  • Jayda Guy and DJ Fett Burger's Freakout Cult label has been a blank canvas for a variety of music: dreamy house from the Canadian Riviera, fat-bottomed disco, ethereal electro and more. Its latest release is from Guy and her fellow Vancouverite Layla Soeker, a familiar face in the city's scene making her production debut. Tapping into Guy's retro side, this 10-inch is all about tropical warmth and disco bump. "Monroe Bumpa" sails at a leisurely 100 BPM, built around a steel drum loop that makes it perfect for the waning days of summer. Its seductive swing is more like soca than 4/4 disco and, combined with a wordless vocal sample, is a freaky twist on what otherwise might have been a workhorse disco instrumental. The duo's other track, "186 Halin' (Loving Myself Mix)," also has a dip in its gait, but it's at a more house-friendly 120 BPM. It looks back to the unhurried sounds of Jaydaisms, with lazy-day synths and a stoned atmosphere rounded off by a drowsy self-help spoken-word sample. Both tracks balance a classic touch with an outlook that feels distinctly modern—and distinctly Vancouver. They nail the mixture of old and new that makes Guy such an appealing DJ.
