DJ Boring & Stanley Schmidt - Vienna001

  • DJ Boring's collaborative EP with Stanley Schmidt, a resident of Berlin's ://about blank, seems to be a good indicator of where his career is heading. Arriving two years after his ubiquitous "Winona" set YouTube ablaze, the lo-fi house producer's new project is named after the Austrian capital where he and Schmidt first met. It includes two solo tracks from Boring and Schmidt, plus an atmospheric breakbeat collaboration called "Stay Young." The record toys with breaks, '90s rave nostalgia and the synths and ethereal grit associated with lo-fi house. Like Boring's recent releases, including EPs on E-Beamz and Let's Play House, his own "Butterfly Walk" leans on inviting melodies and samples filtered through a harder and more eclectic lens. On "I Neva Said It," Schmidt turns towards another sound of the moment, electro, to round out the EP with an early-morning homage to raves gone by. You won't find the immediate pleasure of DJ Boring's breakout track—or first-wave lo-fi house—within Vienna001, but it's still a creative medley of styles new and old.
