Disclosure - Ultimatum

  • Disclosure play Moodymann in their DJ sets and nod towards dance music history, having tapped Kerri Chandler for a remix and played back-to-back with Armand Van Helden. That's partly why Caracal, a tepid collection of pop-dance music that showed little of these influences, was a disappointment. But with the Moog For Love EP and this month's "Ultimatum," Disclosure show they are at their best when releasing sample-driven EPs that land closer to house music's roots. "We wanted to share something we've been working on with you now the sun is shining," Disclosure writes. They build the cut around a sample from the Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara, crafting a track in the tradition of Daphni's mix of Cos Ber Zam's "Ne Noya" or Henrik Schwarz's classic rework of Emmanuel Jal's "Kuar" by turning an anthemic African vocal into a house banger. They slide in tasteful piano solos under this great sample, but otherwise the arrangement is by numbers.
