Galcher Lustwerk - Wristbands

  • It's hard to grow as an artist while also getting closer to the heart of what makes you unique. Galcher Lustwerk's latest single, which precedes a new album, nails that balance. Galcher tries some genuinely new tricks on "Wristbands," which comes with an instrumental version and a shortened edit. There's the post-punk bass guitar, a funky two-note lick like something from a Tom Tom club song that anchors this simple drum machine groove. Then there are the cotton-candy clouds of colorful arpeggios, which add a melodic depth and a delicateness that we haven't heard from Galcher before. The sound design is thin but endearing, as if he's intentionally swerved big-room dynamics in favor of something more intimate. It's living room dance party stuff. The eight-minute "Wristbands" is a slow burner but there are enough subtle shifts to sustain the trickling pace. There's also an instrumental version that lets the subtle synth work ring out in place of Galcher's trippy whisper-rap. It's useful, though his effortlessly cool attitude, which comes across so clearly in the vocals, is what brings his music together.
