  • If Ostgut Ton unofficially divides its roster between Berghain and Panorama Bar, then the longtime resident Ryan Elliott belongs to the house floor (if only because he contributed a mix to Panorama Bar mix series four years ago). Elliott's first record in six years, Paul's Horizon, glides between those poles with three Detroit-tinged tracks. "Paul's Horizon" gets a heads-down drive from its booming kick and long-release open hats. The Detroit strings, which also make an appearance on "Martinsville Morning," add an uplifting emotion and softness to the warehouse-sized drums. The winner is "Grafton Road," as it plays best to Elliott's strengths. There's the groovy spring that he's nailed on tracks for techier labels like Bass Culture. He also opts for a neon synth sound over the more staid strings on the other cuts, which makes the feeling more fun than sentimental. Paul's Horizon demonstrates that Elliott's sound is versatile and could appeal to house and techno fans, but he's most effective when tapping into a jacking, vibrant sound.
