  • "Love isn't clean like that, it's dirty," goes a conversation on Ariel Zetina's "Cleanhouse." The Chicago producer a takes that to heart when it comes to house music on Shell, the first 12-inch for new label Head Charge. "Cleanhouse" is disarmingly DIY, with synth horns and drums that move in and out of sync to woozy effect. (A typically hard-headed remix from Jasmine Infiniti is even more disorienting.) The other original, "Valenzetina," is blanketed by sustained chords that hang in the distance, giving way to a speech copied from the RuPaul's Drag Race star Valentina. The drums disappear before the chords come back stronger. This time the groove is gentle, the inverse of "Cleanhouse" but just as human. Zetina named the EP after an RPG protection spell. There's something comforting about Shell, even when it's dirty.
