  • Titonton Duvante's records are both timeless and of the moment, with analogue warmth made slightly sinister by the occasional break or electro motif. We see this in "Quest For Ma'at," his contribution to the compilation EP that marks the 25th release on his label, Residual Recordings. The track is built around swung percussion pattering under a minor chord melody and squelches of bass. But there's still daylight here: blooming Detroit pads feel like a hot cuppa after a bad trip. The contribution from S-Max, a hydraulic, almost hip-hop number, is loopy and weird, a chameleon primed for daylight hours. The A-Side tracks color more within the lines. Nachtbreaker offers some chords dueting with a punchy bassline and the whisperings of an organ solo. Christopher Rau's "Give It" is tougher than his Smallville releases, but it's still fairly tame. Both are more straight-laced than you might expect from Duvante, but that could be part of their appeal. Refraction Vol. 5 splits the change between the loops of an afters and the rush of the main stage.
