  • A friend who isn't familiar with Kenny Dixon Jr.'s oeuvre once asked me how I'd classify "Lyk U Used 2" in terms of genre. It's a difficult question to answer. That song is closer to André 3000's "Spread" than Moodymann's own "Shades Of Jae." His soul man aspirations snap into focus on "Do Wrong," the introductory track off his forthcoming album, Taken Away. On "Do Wrong," Dixon Jr. chastises his lover for smelling like another man minutes before a gospel breakdown, clearly inspired by Al Green's eternal mix of the sacred and profane. The song borrows multiple elements from Green. There's the sample itself, from Green's "Love And Happiness." Then there's the low-slung groove, heavily influenced by the original. But the connection is deeper than a sample. On "Do Wrong," the exasperated lover Dixon Jr. portrayed on "I'll Provide" seeks solace in church. "You got me back in church / I'm still in love with you / I guess the devil's at work," he sings, before inverting The Jones Girls' legendary kiss off: "You better find a way to love me / 'cause if you don't somebody else will."
