  • Last year, Sofia Kourtesis' jump from Studio Barnhus to Ninja Tune sub-label Technicolor marked a distinct transition for the Lima-born and Berlin-based artist. Fresia Magdalena kept the crooked humor and stripped-down house she'd polished in her apprenticeship with the Swedish crew, but it was more personal, touching on her relationship with her mother and father. Her latest offering, "Estación Esperanza," interpolates Manu Chao's "Me Gustas Tu" and a Peruvian chant against homophobia, continuing the intimacy of her last record but also making it expressly political. With its clipped, Pampa-reminiscent percussion, gentle bell melody and horns, it may not be the loudest protest song, but Kourtesis has crafted a quiet anthem that feels just as passionate as a rallying cry.
