  • Last year marked a turning point for Alexandra Muggli. Her releases as Coffintexts flipped through genres like they were going out of style but two standout EPS, Touch and Body, showcased a distinct sonic signature in the ever-expanding world of Miami dance music. On those records, Muggli distilled contemporary techno, the hardcore continuum and Miami bass down to their essence. These stripped-back percussive workouts are as terrifying as they are sexy. Think chest-rattling bass and bleeping synths, but with enough funk to make you whisper sweet nothings into your dance partner's ear. Her follow-up for the UK home of Latin club music, Florentino's Club Romantico, continues to refine that sound. It also crowns Muggli as the Magic City's latest alchemist turning classic bass and techno into strange but sensual club contortions. There's a certain heads-down sexiness to Suave. The grooves are viscous and sultry, the kind destined to leave beads of sweat on your forehead even after leaving the club's muggy atmosphere. On "I Like The Way She's Moving" Muggli builds a melody—if you can call it that—from subs that sound like helium released underwater and a hacksaw synth that slowly cuts through metallic drums. The rhythm grinds away, with a hopscotch skip that lands somewhere between raptor house and UK garage. "Wet Nasty" is equally sparse, as Miami vocalist Gaby G raps over little flickers of a xylophone-like riff before the percussion churns everything up. The two versions of "Suave" are bolder, but still work with a similarly sparse stereo field. There's an actual lead line on the original, but things still lurch at an off-kilter cadence—just wait for the spacey Terrence Dixon-style breakdown that arrives a minute in. Label boss Florentino's "Megamix" (which he teased on last year's RA mix), on the other hand, is a straight up Tempa-style dubstep anthem. As fun as that track is, the real stars are Muggli's originals. They're case studies in how erotic bass science can be. This is peak-time fare, sure, especially for sweaty lovers in intimate corners of the club.
