- The TraTraTrax cofounder gets bigger and bolder on his debut for Timedance.
- Verraco wants you to find his music outrageous. The track titles from his last EP—"Escándaloo," "jajaja" and "How is this even possible?"—read like comments from an internet radio chatroom. They're more over the top on the next one: "Godspeed >," "Climaxing I Breathe" and "Sí, idealízame" ("yes, idealise me"). This sort of language belongs in the script of some epic fiction, not a chatroom. On his debut for Bristol label Timedance, the Medellín producer goes ham, giving his most excessive display of broken techno yet, as though he were Gladiator's Russell Crowe challenging us with the eternal lines, "Are you not entertained?!"
Breathe… Godspeed demands your attention. Long basslines whir through the raptor house of "0∞" and the futuristic soca of "Godspeed" much like they did on "Escándaloo," only ruder now. They overstay their welcome and bore deep into the festive cheer of the tunes' lighter percussion. The EP is a barrage of musical ideas, not a parade. Nasally vocals stutter between triple time claps on "Climaxing | Breathe," masking what's actually a sluggish dembow stomp. And the barking phrases on "Sí, idealízame" interrupt its liquid drum & bass-style climax like someone mouthing a baile funk beat out the window of a passing car.
This is bold and brash dance music. Verraco unleashes soca, dembow and funk rhythms into an enormous soundstage—because he wants his music to be the driving force of a DJ set, not just a Latin American tangent. He alluded to as much in a Truants conversation, quoting a favourite tweet that reads, "i don't want seasonal CLOTHING and MUSIC, i want TIMELESS CLOTHING and MUSIC." Breathe… Godspeed is a timeless single. Maybe even the sort Maximus Decimus Meridius would say echoes in eternity.
