Luciano - For Disco Only

  • By the time you read this, it’s more than likely that 'For Disco Only' will have long since sold out of every record store in the world (save the bargain outlet in Scarborough which ordered it in by accident). The FDO series of ‘anonymous’ white labels, thus far home to productions from Tobi Neumann and Ricardo Villalobos, is essential stuff for discerning DJs, with past instalments like Ricardo’s Philip Glass-sampling ‘485U’ counting among their authors’ best work. None other than Lucien ‘Luciano’ Nicolet is at the controls for ‘430U’. The untitled A-side sees the moustachioed Chilean take a languid, mournful vocal from Mercedes Sosa and wrap it around one of his quintessentially sharp, shape-shifting rhythm tracks – really breathtaking stuff that manages to be complex and reflective without compromising dancefloor appeal. The other side of this limited 12” rests on an altogether more unexpected sample – Pharrell’s imploring, multi-tracked vocal from N*E*R*D’s ‘Maybe’. Master of groove that he is, Luciano manages to make the Neptune heart’s outpouring fit a bumping, edit-heavy 4x4 backing as if it were God’s own intention Two sides of unmissable dancefloor snap, crackle and pop from contemporary house music’s brightest star.
