- Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann's international profiles shot up over the past year thanks to their Berghain residency, original productions and, in Dettmann's case, a mix CD—but doesn't their fellow resident Norman Nodge deserve the same success? Nodge did a great textured dub remix of Peter Van Hoesen's "Trusted" on Time 2 Express last year, and this fifth instalment on Dettmann's label focuses on different approaches—and suggests that Nodge is perhaps the most diverse sounding producer in the Berghain axis.
Despite their titles, both "Attitudes" and "Maniac" feature funk basslines and housey filters, but Nodge's ability to juxtapose these softer elements with spooky sound textures and reduced, staccato beats give both productions an intangible edginess. On the flip, he ramps up the intensity: "Man Made" is a booming techno track with heavily reverberated percussion, while the noisy bleeps of "Rush" transposes the listener to a dark, grimy corner of the iconic Berlin club. Both tracks are delivered with a depth and resonance of sound that is also common to Klock and Dettmann's productions—surely it's only a matter of time before Nodge joins his colleagues on the international stage.
