oOoOO - oOoOO

  • oOoOO is suspicious on the surface. The producer's name itself is already a sign that you might be in for a gimmick. Choosing an artist name that is more or less impossible to google without proper capitalization is sure to raise eyebrows even before the needle hits the record. Nevertheless, despite the silly name, schlock horror film cover art and association with a Lindsey Lohan covers compilation, the music here is surprisingly strong. oOoOO have a knack for great melodies as can clearly be heard on "Sedsumting" and "Hearts." Nevertheless, they avoid making easily digestible indie pop music by filling each composition with minute details that make this EP a deeply immersive listening experience. "Burnout Eyes," with its multiple levels of vocals and pitch shifted background tones, is intriguingly complex despite being grounded by a catchy chord progression. At a time when the dance music world seems fixated on raw analogue drum machine and vintage synthesizer workouts, this record is refreshing in its unabashed use of lush chords, bittersweet vocals and panoramic sound effects. While it would be easy to dismiss this record as superficial and faddish considering its connections to witch house, a quick listen through the six tracks reveals a deep level of musicianship at work. Much like the ghostly apparition on the cover reaching out for a deathly embrace, this EP drags you into a lush, dark world constructed from fleeting sounds and spine-tingling melodies and vocals. Whether witch house ceases to be fashionable is irrelevant. oOoOO have produced a wonderfully deep record that is likely to prove as enjoyable today as it is in five or ten years.
