- It was only a matter of time before Tony Williams' juke affair as Addison Groove led to some ghetto tech. This is a good thing. It's not that the chipmunks and footcrabs aren't fun or anything, simply that the meatier precursor to the footwork scene is, well, less annoying (unless you're from Chicago and bust breakneck moves) on the long term. "Minutes of Funk," for instance, doesn't rely on novelty chants or relentless scissors. Alongside his last release, "Sexual," it's also one of the Bristol producer's most optimistic works to date. Those minutes are as elated as they are funky: chords and bounce abound.
"It's Got Me" is not as instantly inspiring, but there's a definite groove and it morphs as the track progresses. The three recurring snare hits at the start and finish give the broodingly broken, tom-heavy beats a latch. But then at the halfway point comes the familiar bounce and chord combo—this time a brief, bright respite before a heavy drop back to the broodiness of the beginning. It might have started the other way round, but now it seems that some in the Chicago area could do well to look to Williams for inspiration.
