Jan Driver - Amt

  • You probably have a pretty good idea of what a 12-inch on Boys Noize Records sounds like, but only one of the tracks on Jan Driver's Amt gets close to fulfilling the rave-y, raucous requirements. Needless to say, it's the one called "Raveyard." "Dozer," which opens the record, has what sounds like a live drummer noodling around, trying to find a beat before a revving wall of sound gives it form. It's ravaged, raw and artful. "Raveyard" is all of those things aside from the last one sadly, but it's sure to work for any Aoki acolyte searching for the perfect drop. Not so for "Let's Do It Together," a collab with Siriusmo, which features thumping, tropical hip-hop and a computer voice with a penchant for sexual-themed non-sequiturs. The funk bass-led "Golden Super," meanwhile, sounds like it might go full Justice, but never quite gets there, instead adding video game shimmer. Restraint? BNR? Huh? The WTFs don't stop there, though, as "Amatilda" is...well, it's hard to say what the hell it is. A static din builds up to liquid horse clomp techno, which eventually leads to whirring breakbeat drone techno. I keep saying techno, because that's what I think it is. But, then again, maybe it isn't. I could imagine people like Surgeon, Perc, Boys Noize, Erol Alkan and plenty more all getting away with it. That can only be a good thing.
