Various Artists - Rawarious

  • Rawax has seemingly come out of nowhere in the past few months, dropping two powerhouse EPs by a mysterious producer, Unbroken Dub. Many assumed it was the work of one of dub techno's masters under a new guise, but it's since come to light that it's merely a largely unknown Russian. The Russian connection is a strong one for Rawax, it seems: Their third 12-inch is a compilation with one track from Unbroken Dub and three fellow countrymen. The dubbed out house style of the first two Rawax releases is perpetuated by Alex Danilov, a beautifully lush burner that belongs at both late night sweat sessions and mid-afternoon rooftops. Partner to the A-side is Brother G's deep and sexy track, which has a raw sound and a full-bodied kick. The B-side kicks off with a warm, vintage sounding track by another new name, Diebo. It would sound at home with a wide variety of house families. Carefully crafted, constantly evolving and decidedly old school, it's clearly the gem of the package. Last but not least, is Rawax's familiar name, Unbroken Dub, delivering a more uptempo and big-room finale with a gritty, no-holds-barred structure. Clearly these producers—and this label—will be a force in the upcoming months. Let's hope that they'll continue this tradition of quality with future releases.
